This post won’t be terribly long, but it is one I feel strongly about. Miss Shevaughn & Yuma Wray are currently living the dream: Driving across the country, playing gigs and educating kids (and adults) about the history of music. There isn’t a great deal of material to listen to online, but what they have posted is good. You can check it out on their site.

There are two types of music that they play, one for the kids and one for the grown-ups. The stuff for kids is fun and not dumbed down. I was listening to some this morning and I thought, “Yeah it’s for kids, but I’d listen to it and I don’t have any children.” The more adult-themed music is country-folk that reminds me a bit of Johnny and June Carter Cash-style songs (If June did all the singing).

It’s an unlikely combination, Miss Shevaughn & Yuma Wray. She a musical educator out of Arkansas, he a musician that played with hardcore groups in the DC area. Somehow they find a way to make sweet music together.

Tomorrow night, June 10th, these two are headlining a show at Redline Tap that is part of the Independent Chicago Songwriter Festival. The show will feature some of our city’s most talented writers, including Rachele Eve, Amy Saraiya, and Justin Birchard. There is a ton of stuff going on this weekend in Chicago, and this might be the perfect way to kick it off.

On another note, Miss Shevaughn & Yuma Wray also have a great and very interesting blog that they update pretty often. If you get a chance, check it out. I’ve read it a couple times and find it completely honest and insightful (and also a nice travelogue of our beautiful country).
