Bhi Bhiman @ Schubas 3/25/12

At this point pretty much everything to be said about Bhi Bhiman is out there. It’s been just over a year since he stole our hearts at SxSw 2011, and now he’s winning fans and critical praise from coast to coast for his new album, Bhiman. I have written about him five times now, and though you may tire of hearing about him, singing his praises will never get old to me.

Sunday night was his third show in Chicago since October and the second I’ve seen. Last time he was in town he played Park West, a rather large venue. It was nice to see him in a more intimate setting. The songs that he writes are best enjoyed when there isn’t twenty feet between the stage and the first seats.

I won’t go in to too much since I’ve said it already. I got a couple videos from the show, and the audio came out really good. So instead of me telling you how great it was, you can see it/hear it for yourself.

This first song is called “It’s Cold Outside”

And you may know this one already: “Guttersnipe,” the lead single off of Bhiman. Bhi had members of Rosie Thomas’ band join him and I think it sounds great.

I didn’t write down the setlist, but here’s what I remember:
Kimchi Line
It’s Cold Outside
Eye On You
Crime Of Passion
Cookbook
Atlatl
Take What I’m Given
Ballerina
Guttersnipe

Of those songs, “Ballerina” and “Crime Of Passion” got the best crowd reactions. They both have some comedic elements, so that’s no surprise.

After the show we were treated to a nice long chat with Bhi in the bar. He proved himself once again to be one hell of a nice guy. Many people came up to him while we talked and let him know how much they enjoyed his set. If you had been there, you’d be saying the same.

  1. Yes Bhi Bhiman rocks. I wish I could have seen him at Schuba’s. I saw Anna Fermin there once.
I started a Bhi Bhiman tribute band called Bho Bhoman. Long story.

  2. Bhi is a pleasure. I could listen to him all day. Wonderful voice, great lyrics Gret Everything. And a great guy. A total package!

    1. Cpuldnt agree more, Pat. Extremely nice guy. Deserves every piece of praise that is written about him. Now if only I could find him a decent slice of pizza.

      1. You can ship him some Lou Malnottis(not sure of the spelling). Great deep dish…the crust is the best part.
