Ezra Furman is returning home to Chicago this weekend to finish up his tour with two shows at Schubas Tavern on Belmont. I implore anyone within driving distance to buy a ticket and get to whichever show you can. The early show is all ages and will be opened up by The Canoes (another great Chicago band) and the second show is 21 and up with Chamberlin filling in as support.
I won’t be around this weekend, and while I’m thrilled to be a part of what I’ll be doing and cognizant of the fact that where I’ll be is more important than any concert. That said, a small part of me wishes I had access to a floo network or something so that I could do both. The Year Of No Returning currently sits at number one on my albums of the year list, and has been there since it came out. I think the guy is a genius and a hell of a songwriter, so do yourself a favor and check him out.
WBEZ, the public radio station around here-91.5 on your radio dial-brought Ezra in to do a couple songs from the record, and this one is great. Stripped of all the extra flourishes that help create the mood of the album, it’s amazing how well this song comes off. If you like it, you can purchase the record on Ezra’s bandcamp page.
