Bummer-“Low” (Video)

Seldom do I like a video that is based mostly on interpretive dance. Somehow the combination of new Chicago band Bummer and star of television’s Warehouse 13 Allison Scagliotti works. Maybe it’s because she’s also in one of my favorite episodes of Party Down, “Taylor Stiltskin’s Sweet 16.” I don’t know if she’s had training in ballet or not, but her dancing seems like she knows what she’s doing.

The star for me is the music, of course. It’s a long way from Young Jesus-the band frontman John Rossiter and bassist Shawn Nystrand were in before this. That band may or may not be resurrected in the future, but right now they’re all in on Bummer, and I’d say it’s a good call based on this song. It falls somewhere in that pop-trap genre that’s been gaining momentum over the past year or so. I don’t know if all their music sounds like that, but they do it well. I guess we can all find out because they’re playing a show tonight at Empty Bottle that is $8 at the door, but FREE if you RSVP online.
