The people of Des Moines were ready and waiting for St. Lucia to take the stage as the first band playing the 80/35 festival this year. The guitar/bass player Ross Clark is an Iowa native, so a hometown crowd made it all the more exciting for the crowd and the band.
Early comers were pressed up against the railing separating the photo pit from the stage, complaining about how many photographers were here to take pictures (sorry). All the animosity faded when the music started, and to my surprise all attendees seemed to know every word to every song. South African lead singer Jean-Philip Grobler provided some extra oomph with his onstage rocking and rolling. His guitar was flung in every direction as he led the opening band in a set that I assume will be a sign of great things to come.
