Drowners don’t hit the BMI stage at Lollapalooza for a few hours still, but some Chicago fans got a preview of their set last night at Schubas when the band opened for Nothing But Thieves. I’m not terribly familiar with the band, but what I am aware of I’ve enjoyed. The fans appear to be die-hards through and through. When Matt Hitt mentioned that it had been a couple years since they’d been in town, someone in the crowd shouted “THREE YEARS!!!” Someone else yelled “BEAT KITCHEN!” And the memories brought a smile to the singer/guitarist’s face.
The band bounced back and forth between older tunes and songs off their new record On Desire that came out last month. The audience seemed to enjoy them all the same, though there was a twinkle in some eyes every time Matt said “Here’s an old one.” Like all great sets, the energy never faded, and they definitely left the crowd wanting more.
