Natalie Prass has had a tumultuous time since her debut self-titled album came out in 2015. Soon she’ll be free from her current contract and able to put out her new music so we can all hear it. The show last night was filled with mostly songs I hadn’t heard yet and some I knew very well. She had fellow RVA resident Angelica Garcia open the show for her, and some Nashville neighbors from her time in Tennessee came out to wish her well.
I’m really looking forward to the new record. It will be very different, with some funk, jazz, and R&B elements. In a couple of the new songs my mind went to stuff like Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston, but also Motown-era songs. It should be interesting. There’s a new band backing her up, and I think this was only their second show together, which was pretty impressive considering how tight they performed.
