Angel Olsen at Pitchfork Music Festival

When I first started writing about music seven years ago, I found myself covering a show at Empty Bottle for a site that no longer exists. One of the openers was a young singer/songwriter of whom I had never heard. Her name was Angel Olsen and five seconds into her first song I was a fan. At that point she was still pretty timid and didn’t talk to the audience much, but her songs were strong and you could already hear in her voice that she had what it takes to be a star (assuming that’s what she wanted).

Cut to this past weekend, touring her best record to date (My Woman) and playing a sub-headlining set on the stage where hip hop legends A Tribe Called Quest would play next. It’s been great to see her reach a wider audience and I’m glad I had the opportunity to catch this set, as I hadn’t seen her play live since that night at Empty Bottle.
