I feel like sweetness is something everyone could use right now, and Holy Hive delivers a heaping teaspoon of it on “Float Back To You.” This is the title track to their first LP, the follow-up to the EP Harping. Holy Hive is made up of singer-songwriter Paul Spring, acclaimed drummer Homer Steinweiss (Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings), and bassist Joe Harrison. Float Back To You will be out May 29th and can be pre-ordered here.
I was sucked in immediately by the dreamy guitar melody and timeless falsetto by Spring. There’s a certain ease that makes the song wash over you. It’s like a calming ray of sunshine on a gloomy day.
The video is also fantastic. Animated by Sophia Heymans (who also plays piano on the record) and shot by Spring himself, it captures an innocence of youth while also bringing in the bittersweet feeling that occurs when you start to leave your childhood behind.
Listening to this song a few times led me to check out some of Holy Hive’s other tunes, and I’ve become a fan in a matter of minutes. They have a strong sonic palate that drives their music, so if you like one song you’ll likely enjoy the others.
