Luna Li-Alone But Not Lonely

As the restrictions have lifted and live music is starting to come back, I may have gone a bit crazy. Every show announcement was like a little slice of heaven and I was putting together a full pie. The first thing I got tickets to was Japanese Breakfast at Thalia Hall. Luna Li will be the opener for that one (the second of four Chicago shows), so I figured I should check out her songs and see what she sounds like. Fortunately she just released a new video earlier this month to give me a little taste.

“Alone But Not Lonely” was just the kind of fun, dance-like-no-one’s-watching, silly bop I was hoping it would be. A charismatic declaration of being comfortable in your own skin and happy to spend some time doing things you love on your own. The video allows Luna Li (classically trained pianist and harpist Hannah Kim) to share her personality with the world and put her musicianship on full display. What the song is lacking in lyrical content it more than makes up for with a funky bass line and reverb-drenched vocals.

If you’re not able to catch her at a Japanese Breakfast show, check out the Doomin’ Sun Fest put together by Bachelor (Jay Som and Palehound) livestreaming on June 10th.
