I’m not sure how it happens, but the people of Scandinavia seem to be born with an innate ability to write pop music. Perhaps it’s hearing ABBA in the womb that causes that little musical piece of the brain to grow. Whatever it is, I hope it continues to bless us with great songs. The latest artist I would ask you to take a chance on is velies, a Danish-born singer/songwriter now residing in Berlin.
“You & Me” is her debut track, but it is as insightful and well-executed as anything you’ll hear on the radio. The light guitar-strum and simple bassline keep the focus on the words and voice of Esther Møller Fogh, the wise and unpretentious woman behind the veiles moniker. Her voice flits and flutters over the other instruments, lingering on words to accentuate the emotion. While the sound is very feminine, one might be able to hear the influence of wildly popular male singers Ed Sheeran or Shawn Mendes.
veiles is a bit more lo-fi, which I appreciate because it makes the listener really focus on the story the song is telling. There is a little production bit that I really like. It’s just a little sound buried in the background, and it almost makes a noise like a WOO! but kind of muted. Flourishes like that add a wonderful texture and keep things interesting on repeat listens, of which I have taken many.
I like the way the song takes the old boy meets girl, loses girl, gets girl back story arc and flips it a bit. veiles takes the outline and puts it in her perspective, realizing that sometimes you don’t know how good you have it until you don’t. It’s a reminder for everyone to not take others for granted and know that on your journey to find what you want, you could lose what you need.
The video is directed by Kaos Film, with veiles and Malthe Madsen as the couple. Beautifully shot, the clip captures moments of joy and heartache through a short period of this relationship.
I think this is a beautiful debut from a strong songwriter, and I can’t wait to hear what veiles does next.
