You may be surprised to hear that the co-frontman for New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk parody band has a new solo album coming out this week. Or, if you’re a weirdo like myself, you’ve been waiting for this moment for years. Bret McKenzie has won a Grammy, an Oscar, and his film appearances have grossed over three billion dollars; future generations will no longer think of Spuds when they hear the name McKenzie…they will think of Bret.
“If You Wanna Go” is the second single from Songs Without Jokes, and it really gets me excited for the rest of the album. Bret’s pulling a lot from mid-to-late 80’s George Harrison and Billy Joel, and that vibe mixed with his own talent for words and music is really special.
Sub Pop is releasing the album, which you can order here. Bret will be touring, naturally, and he comes to Chicago on October 28th. You can see all the dates here.
