It’s been over a year and a half since we last heard from our friends in Molehill, and their latest single could not have come at a better time. As we come closer and closer to the mid-term elections it’s nice to hear a tune about the power of admitting fault, and the beauty in learning from our mistakes. There aren’t a whole lot of songs out there that deal with these things so directly, so this really feels like a breath of fresh air.
Molehill doesn’t stray too far from the sound they’ve been cultivating over the last decade, but this is a bit different from what they’ve released in the past. It’s the cleanest and clearest vocal from Peter Manhart that I’ve heard, which is a good thing. Here, the lyrics are delivered perfectly with production that puts them at the forefront. There’s a wonderful New Order-ish synth line that’s fun and interesting, adding a new texture to the mix.
Maybe it’s because it has been a while since we’ve heard from them, but this sounds like they’re biggest progression to date. I’ve been a fan of their music for a decade now, and “Say You Were Wrong” might be the best example of their music and message coming together perfectly. The track finds each member bringing their A-game, and I hope it’s the first of many more to come. Preferably sooner than another 18 months.
