It’s been a while since there was a really great, fun girl group hitting the charts in the US and UK. We’ve been in a solo artist slump for over a decade, so when I heard about FLO, I was immediately intrigued. The trio-Jorja, Stella, and Renee-combine their international backgrounds to create a sound both familiar and new. They bring the bouncing rhythms and vocal strength of Destiny’s Child and bring it into the 2020’s with a London twist.
It was a year ago tomorrow that their debut single was released, followed by an EP. At the end of 2022 they were shortlisted for the BBC’s Sound Of… poll, eventually winning over acts like DYLAN, Biig Piig, and Fred again…and the Brit Award for Rising Star. Their talent is undeniable, and if you love that late 90’s early 00’s R&B sound, you’ll quickly become a fan.
Already among their many fans is hip-hop all-timer Missy Elliott, who adds a new rap verse to “Fly Girl,” which samples her classic “Work It.” If that doesn’t seal the deal for you, I don’t know what will.
FLO sold out their short run of US shows in just a few minutes, so look for them to maybe come back in the fall for a longer excursion across the country. Make sure you don’t miss out on any new show announcements or music by following them on Instagram.
