Wax Idols at Empty Bottle
September 9 @ 9:00 pm - 11:30 pm$12
We’ve been fans of WAX IDOLS, the primary project of Oakland-based songstress HETHER FORTUNE, ever since the release of her raw, dirgey debut LP No Future, out on HoZac in 2011. A four-piece based out of Oakland, CA; their sound calls on the mutated aesthetics of varying strains of post-punk (songwriting elements from darkwave and Factory/Rough Trade pioneers, as well as the complex interplay and emotion of post-hardcore) and classic pop-rock hooks, without carbon-copying those who made these maps. HETHER FORTUNE’s powerful voice (as songwriter, arranger, producer, singer and guitarist) is at the center, but this makes no other member of the band a replaceable element. Their work together is what makes WAX IDOLS’ energy so vital.
Forged in Richmond, Virginia the dark post-punk quartet SHADOW AGE shimmer brightly towards their first Bottle performance. Gloomy, yet romantic, the east coast squadron takes enormous cues from 80s darkwave as they blend moody post-punk with dreamy guitars and crisp percussion. With soaring choruses soaked in reverb, propulsive rhythmic break-downs and haunting ethereal vocals, SHADOW AGE is the real deal for all things darkwave.
Last Fall, GANSER’s This Feels Like Living saw the band exploring new edges of their post-punk roots. Keeping their ambivert energy, they began investigating more angular territory and riotously released their debut album, Odd Talk (No Trend Records), with us in April. Occasionally leaving earlier synth elements behind completely, with no wave touches joining their original influences like Sad Lovers and Giants, Gary Numan, and others, the four piece noise behemoth has been tumbling onward gaining impressive features in Pitchfork, Spin, AV Club, Billboard, Post-Punk and countless other publications. Always a got dam pleasure, we’re elated to welcome back GANSER.
