Katie & The Honky Tonks: Two-Steppin’ In The Shower

Honky Tonk is a funny thing. It’s the only musical form that also describes where you’ll hear it and how you’ll be dancing while the band plays. It’s made for breaking bottles over broken hearts while whiskey flows and fists fly. At least, that’s the image I get in my head when I hear Honky Tonk.

Katie Sires and her band of Honky Tonks (oh yeah it also describes the band!) hail from Waterloo, Iowa. It’s been a long time since I’ve written about an Iowa band, and I’m glad to be back to it with this one. They’ve been together for a good long while now, and are ready to put out their new EP. “Two-Steppin’ In The Shower” is the title track.

Right off the bat you can hear the payoff of two great decisions: First, that Hammond B3 way out front at the beginning of the track, and second, the voice hits and goes even further out front. The vocal delivery by Sires is the focal point of the song, and everything else is built around that.

This particular Honky Tonk has all the usual dna you’d find in a country song, mixed with a bit of soul and funk provided by the bass and guitar. There’s a leading rhythm that guides the listener along, practically moving your feet for you. Without even trying you can find yourself gliding across the dance floor like a regular Urban Cowboy.

If you’re digging the vibe, give the band a follow on Facebook or Instagram. The EP will be out March 1st on digital and CD. If you’re in their area, you can check out the band live twice a month at Dancemor Ballroom starting this Thursday.
