Torres-What an enormous room

It’s been almost a decade since Torres raced into the upper echelon of indie rock with her sophomore album, Sprinter. And two and a half years since her last release, Thirstier. With a tour starting up next week, and What an enormous room out a week later, Torres is ready to offer up the next step in her evolution as an artist.

Right off the bat we get a little something new with “Happy man’s shoes.” It’s got a funky beat full of shimmering synths replacing the shredding guitar work we’ve come to expect from the artist. A great intro to get listeners prepared for the journey this record takes them on.

I am a fan of the singles Torres released ahead of the album, but found others here that I like even more. “Jerk into joy,” which includes the lyric that gives the album its title, is probably my favorite. It’s one of the longer tracks, and gives Mackenzie Scott plenty of time to put her raw vulnerability on full display. The long, quiet outro adds an opportunity for reflection that I really appreciate.

With Torres, Scott has spent a lot of time covering loss and isolation in a beautiful way. On What an enormous room she’s expanding not just her sonic palette, but her writing as well.

I love that each album has given us something unexpected and new. Listening to them we’ve been able to mark her growth as an artist who keeps growing and maturing with each step. Her impressive string of records continues with this one.

Torres hits the road starting January 17th in Cleveland, and cones to Chicago on the 18th for a Tomorrow Never Knows Fest spot at Lincoln Hall. You can find a full list of shows and ticket info here.
