Terry White-You Won’t Have A Name

Back in September, local musician Terry White put out his 4th studio album You Won’t Have A Name. It flew under my radar for a couple of months, but I’ve finally heard it and I’m ready to report.

A good place to start is at the end. The penultimate song on this album is a cover of Woody Guthrie’s “Deportee (Plane Crash At Los Gatos),” and as always Woody’s words are as relevant now as they were when he wrote them. It’s a song that brings You Won’t Have A Name firmly into the present and brings the themes White brings up throughout all come together.

Guthrie isn’t the only voice White had me thinking about while listening to his record. There’s a good chunk of Elvis Costello, a little Tom Petty, and a healthy dose of traditional folk songs. White takes all of these and builds the foundation for the record, which then goes in all different directions. Sometimes uptempo almost rockabilly and others more campfire ballad.

My personal favorite is probably “Praying For Rain.” It bounces along with a great flow and a wide range of instruments. It’s the most fun track on the album, and I wish there was a bit more of this vibe-it shows up in flashes in other songs but doesn’t stay for long.

You can check out the rest of the album here. If you find yourself digging what you hear and want to see White for yourself, he’s going to be appearing at Fitzgerald’s Nightclub in Berwyn as part of a Last Waltz performance with The Zimmermen.
